OK, I admit it, things rarely stay stock with my basses,
and for years Brian Dunn over at Rainbow Guitars was the guy I called.
I used to hang out with Bob Mick (luthier magnificico)
and watch him make his Bromberg and electric upright basses.
But he's in the building industry, not day to day repair
Fast forward: Brian Dunn retires (several years ago) to make custom
acoustic instruments and attempt a family life
Sooooooooooo, Reed Munns is snatched from Guitars Etc to
Rainbow Guitars, and does an excellent job. But the man is busy,
it took several months for my Frankenstein Godin BG-IV Dark Star
pickup custom installation to be completed (excellent job, well worth
the wait).
So, in the meantime I discovered Mike Cutler over at Guitars Etc
who just finished a custon preamp install (Noll Electronics, very cool
German parametric two band) and he books a few weeks in advance.
Any other good luthiers to add to the list? I realize I'm an electric guy,
but it would be cool if we could make a list of both electric and acoustic
repair guys and our experiences with them
Stay low . . . . . . . . boom boom boom

Reed, Richie, and the boys down at the Rainbow repair shop have been EXTREMELY helpful to me in getting materials I need (but which you won't always find in a typical music store), like bone blanks for carving new saddles & nuts, plastic shim material of various gauges, new & used hardware (tuners, bridges, etc.)... I have also had them do a few jobs on my instruments, jobs that I wasn't comfortable trying myself, like installing an output jack in the butt of my 12-string.
Mike Cutler, over at Guitars, Etc., is a great guy who has done very nice work on my Strat and my J-50 acoustic. Very low-key, supportive, and easy to talk to.
Another great luthier is Gordon Groves. Different personality from the guys mentioned above, but boy does he know his stuff (from my humble perspective). A few years ago, I talked him into letting me pay him to be his shop slave for a week; kind of like an apprenticeship. I learned a ton! Of course, with my well-documented crappy memory, some of that has slid by the wayside. I know of two often-seen guitars that he has made for local musicians: one for Linda Lou Reed of The Desert Drifters; and one for Stefan George - it's his #1 acoustic, and it's awesome (especially in Stef's hands...). |
